Google’s Gemini AI will not answer questions like “where is Palestine?” or “what is Palestine?,” instead directing users to “try using Google Search” if they want “up-to-date information.” At the same time, Gemini will answer questions like “where is Israel?” or “what is Israel?”
OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot gave a straightforward answer to the question “where is Palestine?", though Copilot also presented a map of Palestine, Texas. We don’t know why Gemini refuses to say what or where Palestine is and Google has not immediately responded to our request for comment. In February, TechCrunch said that Gemini refused to say “what are the latest updates in the Israel-Palestine conflict?” and speculated that the use of the word “Palestine” might have been the reason. In my testing, Gemini refused to answer “where is Gaza?” but did answer “where is Tel Aviv?”
